Summer Handicap Series
Marggaret Scrutton and her merry band of volunteers have been running our ever popular Summer Handicap Series for many years. We asked Margaret to give us an brief history and insite into how this ever popular series has eveolved over the years.
Our club handicaps have been a part of the club since day one of its existence. They were first started by Dave Parke with the help of John Watson (former Club President), then Denise (Dave's partner) helped Dave.
There was a gap for a time when there were no handicaps then they were started again with the help of Tony Tomashavic, John Boyes and Chris Clayton, but before long they were back in the hands of Dave and at this point I started to help him.
We decided to organise them as a team with the help of Neil, Bob and then Steve and Olive. They have evolved now that I do all the admin, calculate the handicaps etc sort out toilet facilities, cafes etc, Dave and I decide on the dates and locations and each course has to be “walked,” accurately measured (otherwise the handicaps don't work) and a basic risk assessment done. On the night Dave organises marshals and does the starting of the runners etc while me and “my ladies” do the admin and then organise the runners into order (an almost impossible task at times!) Dave then works out the time''s which I check before they are published. Just a point the results after each event are only going on Facebook, they should also be E mailed as many do not do Facebook, hopefully the new Website will stop the need for this
The aim is to provide a club activity that all members, whatever their ability, can take part in, to create a good club night, and integrate the various running groups within the club into one big group, and on the locations where it is possible to arrange a “cafe stop” for a bit of social integration after the race.
We used to also run a winter series on Sunday mornings but we did not get the numbers to make them worth the effort of organising, this was due to all the road, fell and cross country races taking place on a Sunday.
The summer series consists of a minimum of 6 races, all are usually between 3 and 4 miles long. We try to get a mix of road track trail and beach locations (though the latter does depend on the tides on a Thursday evening!) If we can add in a seventh race we will but this depends on circumstances
Points are award for each race with the winner getting 100 and decreasing by one point for each following runners.
Each Race has a first, second and third prize
At the end of the season we have a series winner, second and third, sometimes more depending how many runners take part in the series these are calculated on the aggregate scores of each runners best five scores.
We have awards for the fastest male and female (1st, 2nd, 3rd)
We have prizes for anyone who does all the races in the series
If anyone does anything particularly funny or daft we usually have a daft prize for them too
